Profile FAQ

Please Note: This Driver Profile is completely separate from the one you use to register for events on nasaproracing.com. Nothing in this profile is used for maintaining your NASA membership.

The NASA Great Lakes Community is the new home of Driver Profiles and it is so much more. It can be a convenient place to keep in touch with all the wonderful people you have met at NASA Great Lakes events from drivers and crew to the Team and volunteers who make sure everything runs smoothly. Not only does it provide the traditional profile, but it has key features such as Private Messaging, Activity Feed, Friending, and Following.

Like any pre-packaged system, we are restricted to operate within its structure. That is why this specific FAQ was created. We hope you will take the time to look through it so you can avoid some of its pitfalls.

If you have any questions or suggestions not addressed in the FAQ, don't hesitate to contact us.

You can directly access your profile by clicking on your name or picture at the top of any page.

Icons

- Hover over this symbol next to each item in your profile for help with the item.

- This is used to set the visibility of each profile item. See "Profile Visibilty Settings" for more info.

* - Items with the red asterisk are required.

Classification
You selected this when you registered but it can be changed by editing your profile. You should select Race, Time Trial, or HPDE even if you are also a NASA-GL Team member or Volunteer. NASAGL-Team and NASAGL-Volunteer should only be selected by those who are not drivers. These classifications were created so everyone can participate in the community.

NASAGL-Team and NASAGL-Volunteer Classification
If you do select NASAGL-Team and NASAGL-Volunteer as your classification, you should leave Series blank.

You have the same profile items as the drivers. You can complete as much of the information as you like but there was no way to tailor it to non-drivers. Be creative.

Visibility is how you control who sees what in your profile. Each items visibility was set when you registered but can be changed on an individual basis. Most items are set to Public by default.

You should leave most items set Public so that they can be seen by anyone looking for you. This was how the old profiles on the old site were set up. However, it is ultimately up to you.

**Note** Please leave Classification, Series, and Car Number set to Public.

The one area that you may want to limit visibility is the "Contact Information" section of your profile.
**Note** Your e-mail address is only visible to Administrators and your "Friends". No one will see it.

Settings Defined
Public - can be seen by anyone.
Members Only - can be seen by any registered member of the NASA-GL website.
Admin Only - can only be seen by NASA-GL Administrators.
Friends - can only be seen by those you accept Friend requests from.

This section contains your basic information.

Select your Country first as this sets the State/Region dropdown.

If you have a website, simply enter the URL, like www.nasagretlakes.com.
The actual hyperlink will be generated for you in your profile.
Don't put a Facebook URL here. You can do that under "Contact Information".

Series - Time Trial and HPDE will find classes and groups listed here with the race series.

If you do select NASAGL-Team and NASAGL-Volunteer as your classification, you should leave Series blank.

You can add up to 4 images to your profile.

The first is your headshot. It MUST be a square image. This image should measure 120px x 120px. If it is not square, it will distort when displayed in your profile. A headshot is the only image that should be placed in this slot.

The other 3 can be any size and the system will resize them automatically. We recommend they that you minimize the file size and go no smaller than 640px x 480px.

There are 2 ways to upload your images. The first is to drag your file and drop it in the box labeled "Drop File(s) Here". The other is to click "Upload File" and select the file you want to upload.

Once you have uploaded files you will be able to select any of them. They are stored in a folder that you have access to. This makes it easy to put the images in any order you like.

This section is pretty self explanatory. Most will be single line entries. However, there is one exception.

Other Mods - since this item has the potential to be rather large, I needed to find a way within the system to allow for multi-line input. For example, you want to make a list of mods and have one mod per line. You accomplish this by inserting a tilde (~) in front of the new line. This symbol is usually accessed on the keyboard by holding the shift key and pressing the button to the left of the number 1. You can always tell if the tilde will work on a field by reading the info by hovering over the help icon for the field.

Sample Input
Special Crossmember ~Nitrous ~Muffler Bearings

This outputs as:
Special Crossmember
Nitrous
Muffler Bearings

Without the tildes ~ it would output as one long single line.

List your sponsors here. One sponsor per set. Notice each sponsor entry has 2 boxes, one for their name and a second for their wesite URL. For the website entry, enter only the site name. EX. www.nasagreatlakes.com
This section has several fields that you can use the tilde (~) to make use of multiline text. Career Highlights, All Tracks Driven, and Other Interests can all use the tilde. You can always tell if the tilde will work on a field by reading the info by hovering over the help icon for the field.

In case you missed the explanation in an earlier section of the FAQ, these items have the potential to be rather large, I needed to find a way within the system to allow for multi-line input. For example, you want to make a list of All Tracks Driven and have one track per line. You accomplish this by inserting a tilde (~) in front of the new line. This symbol is usually accessed on the keyboard by holding the shift key and pressing the button to the left of the number 1.

Sample Input
Mid-Ohio ~Road America ~Gingerman

This outputs as:
Mid-Ohio
Road America
Gingerman

Without the tildes ~ it would output as one long single line.

This section gives you additional ways to let people find and learn about you. Find additional information for entering the links to these resources by reading the help info by hovering over the help icon for the field.

You will probably want to change the visibility settings for these items. You can find more information about the visibility settings under "Edit Profile - General Information" above.

The Member Directory lists all members within the selected group, Race, Time Trial, HPDE, and NASA Great Lakes Team & Volunteers.

You have several options to search for members. The first is the right search box that lets you narrow down the current list to a specific Race or Time Trial class or HPDE group. This search option is only available for these groups.

The left search box operates globally, meaning it not only searches the current member list but all members. However, it gives you other search criteria options.

While viewing your profile, select "Messages" from the menu to enter your Messaging Center.

Here is where you can read and send meassages. This is also where you will find the "Notifications" tab for addressing friend requests.

You can send private messages to other members three ways.

1. You can do this through the Member Directory pages (look for the little envelope icon)on their member card. The "To" field will be filled in for you.
2. You can send a message while viewing a member's profile by selecting "Send Message" in the menu. The "To" field will be filled in for you.
3. You can also send a message from your message center in your profile. Select "Messages" from the menu. However, you must know the User Name of the person you are messaging. As you type the name, the system will display matching suggestions.

Your profile Activity Feed is like a blog. Here you can share your adventures with others.

It is Public in nature. However, you can set visibility for individual entries that are only seen by those you specify. You can also attach files and photo's to an entry.

You can make Friend requests in 2 places, either the Member Directory or while viewing a member profile.

To be perfectly honest, I have no idea whatsoever Follow does. The documentation doesn't even address it.
